Valuing Qantas Frequent Flyer Points

Qantas has one of the most sought-after points programs in the world. Billions of points are accumulating in frequent flyer digital wallets every year. New ways of collecting points through insurance, shopping, and hotels and a general inability to use those points during the pandemic has created fierce competition in using those balances. Here we'll detail the way the QFF blog values points, in Premium Seat Classic Rewards.

Example 1: SYD to LAX Business Class Flex Fare

Departing on a Business Classic Reward from Sydney on the 31st of October on QF 17 and Returning on the 6th of December on QF12 would set a traveller back by 216,800 points and $595.

If paid for with cash, the same flights would currently be $24,917.

To calculate the value of a point in this specific scenario, minus the reward cash component ($595) from the total fare price ($24,917) = $24,322. Then divide this amount by the total number of points required (216,800). = 11.2 cents of value per point.

First and Business Class airfares are, at present, expensive, giving this calculation a higher value than usual. Typically, a return flight to LAX from the east coast of Australia would retail for $12,150, showing a value of 5.5 cents per point.

Remember, the value is likely much lower if you use your points on economy flights, reward store redemptions or hotels.
