To Europe via the Island of the Gods
Most Australians enjoy a regular trip to Bali, but only some will consider it a gateway to Europe and a great way to use your Qantas frequent flyer points for First class and Business class travel. There's limited availability on popular flight routes such as Sydney to Dubai and Melbourne to Dubai, so transiting in Bali will open up more availability.
Routing from MEL - DPS - DXB - CDG results in similar time spent in the sky as flying direct from Dubai. To use classic rewards, this routing needed a stopover in DPS, resulting in a short 24-hour stay but there are options that do not require this.
The routing includes a mix of business and first classes for the two longest legs. Both flights will have emirates industry-leading products; EK369 is 777 business class offering 9 hours in the sky that will fly by in the stunning suites, complete with a lie-flat bed, an in-flight premium bar and a gourmet menu of regionally inspired dishes.
EK71 in First class will be a luxury experience you'll never forget, including private cabins, showers, cinema screens, extraordinary meals and top-shelf cellars in the sky.
The fare comes in at 185,100 points and $740.05 in taxes. Similar routing, albeit in Business class for the entire trip, is priced at $7,511.55. The classic reward redemption delivers $6,771.5 in value ($7,511.55 - $740.05) or 3.7 cents per point.
Routing via Bali also reduces tax and carrier charges which have been a bane for frequent flyer redemptions since Emirates increased the carrier charges in early 2022. Taxes on the routing to Paris come in at $740.05 while routing MEL to DXB direct taxes come in at $1,728.
If you're looking to travel in style and want to make the most of your Qantas points, consider Bali as a transit stop on your way to Europe. With reduced taxes and increased availability, it's a great time to book your trip. Happy searching!
