Cathay away - Hong Kong reopens
Hong Kong has awoken from its slumber; the once bustling and metropolitan city will take a while to get back on its feet but presents a new gateway to Europe for Qantas Frequent flyers.
Hong Kong has been closed to international tourists since the pandemic's beginning under some of the strictest border rules in the world. But that's all set to change; Cathay operates daily flights from Sydney, five days a week from Melbourne and two days a week from Brisbane and Perth.
According to SmartTraveller, a stopover will cost three days of medical surveillance, which doesn’t sound too appealing unless a traveller has reasonable cause to be in Hong Kong. For that reason, book a connecting flight, stay airside and visit the gorgeous Cathay lounges.
The Wing, Cathay’s First Class lounge, is stunning. A private sanctuary for first class, Qantas Platinum, Platinum One and Oneworld Emerald travellers. Day Spa-esk Cabanas with luxury amenities, the Haven, an À la carte restaurant, and free-flowing Veuve Clicquot will leave you wishing for a flight delay.
Once in Hong Kong, there are connecting flights to France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom and similar flights are available for the return legs.
Cathay has increased the availability of premium cabin reward seats with solid coverage into 2023. A short search revealed these connecting flights in March and May.
Example A. SYD - HKG - LHR
If you're struggling to find dates that work, try connecting to Perth and then onto Hong Kong, where there is additional availability.
